Theater Lighting

The traditional atmosphere of luxury and excitement found in most movie theaters is perhaps the most loved element of the experience. This atmosphere is only obtained and managed through a variety of elements, not least of all atmospheric lighting. Cinema lights are positioned and directed in locations best suited to enhancing drama, and are easily turned on and off before and after the movie.

Movie theaters tend to have no windows in the screening area, as light falling on the screen will create a glare and prevent the audience from making the picture in all its detail. Heavy drapes, therefore, are a must when setting up your own home movie theater. Many find that lights with a diffusing capability are the best choice. This means that the fixture comprises three or four lights, which can be directed away from the movie screen and the audience, and they can be dimmed.

The color of your theater lighting is something else to consider. Different colored lighting provides different moods and atmospheres; for example, a soft orange light will generate a warm and inviting atmosphere, and fluorescent lighting is sharp but clear. Bright lighting will be required for times when movies are not being shown, and ideally you will have a dimmer switch for turning on this bright light.

You will also need lighting fitted close to your projector. When selecting a light for this purpose, be sure to consider only those that will provide a constant stream of light and risk minimal eyestrain. Many experts in this particular field recommend using a bias light for these reasons.

It is often a good idea to pay a visit to a lighting store before making any final decisions. This will mean that you can see and handle the light fittings before parting with your money, but there is the added bonus of having experts on hand with whom to discuss your decision. The staff at the store will usually be able to advise you on the best lighting for the function and the mood you wish to create.

Another way of researching lighting - perhaps the best way - is to visit public movie theaters and examine the theater lighting found there. There are many different moods and atmospheres that are relatively simple to create once one is aware of them. Pay attention to brightness, color and positioning, and recreate the ambience of the movie theater in your own home!
